I think it all started with Virgin Atlantic making its tongue in cheek in flight safety video, but Delta’s new videos take it to a whole new level. I am sure frequent fliers start to tune these out, but Delta aims to change that by slightly tweaking the videos over time. Although Fast Co. Create didn’t mention it, I think Wieden + Kennedy New York will be dropping in some Easter eggs. For example, I am pretty sure that Abraham Lincoln is sitting behind the flight attendant as he puts on his life vest in video one.
I also love that this is becoming a competition to see who can come up with the latest gag to get you to watch their safety video. Air New Zealand recently released this Hobbit themed video.
And of course, the Virgin Atlantic video is a must see to find out where it all started.
So next time you are designing something to attract attention, think about what it takes to break a pattern and get someone to look up from their favorite novel or iPhone and you’ll be on the right track!
