Designing to Stand Out

I try to spend about twenty minutes a day plowing through and cataloging inspiration. Lately I have noticed something on the architectural blogs like Contemporist and Arch Daily. More often then not, featured home designs in densely packed cities like Sydney, London and Tokyo have façades made of bold forms that set them apart from their neighbors. But more than that, the bold uses of shape, color, finish and material seem to negate the power lines and poles that are just a few feet from the façade.

The trade show floor is just as cacophonous as
the bustling streets of any large metropolis. So next time you are designing to
draw attention to your space, look at the tricks that architects use to set the
façade apart from the surroundings.
