The San Mateo County History Museum needed to create preliminary concepts to be used in fundraising for two new galleries. As creative director, I used insights from the curatorial staff and developed initial gallery themes which were then converted into sketches by an illustrator.
Dig into Prehistoric San Mateo
The first gallery was to highlight the most complete dinosaur skeleton of the amphibious Neoparadoxia repenningi which was discovered in San Mateo County. The gallery would use a video, sound, and shake simulator experience to simulate a Stratvator that would take visitors back in time and deep down into the strata of the dig site. Once guests emerged from the Stratavator, there was a simulated dig site and underwater diorama that held the skeleton.
New Directions: The Disruptors, Doers and Innovators
The second gallery highlighted Silicon Valley innovators and entrepreneurs from the San Mateo County area.
Breaking out of the mold is what it takes to influence and innovate. The concept visualizes this with some of the radiating beams at the entrance breaking through into new territory. The wall and case style will be faceted planes to again give a risk-taking and envelope-pushing look. By reducing the number of 90 degree angles, the whole space will start to look like it is going off in all sorts of directions and not in “the same direction” as those who maintain the status quo.
